MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM AND MANUFACTURING PROCESS THEREOF

A magnetic recording medium and a manufacturing process thereof are provided to increase recording density and to prevent degradation of magnetic property and contamination of the substrate by placing a recording layer with a magnetic material grain having a regular granular structure, and a nonmagnetic material boundary. A magnetic recording medium comprises a substrate(100), a soft magnetic lower layer(110), a structure layer(140), and a recording layer(160). The soft magnetic lower layer is formed on the substrate. The structure layer has regular patterns with projections(120a) and valleys(120b). The recording layer has a magnetic material grain(161) formed by segregation induced by the patterns of the structure layer in a regular granular structure, and a nonmagnetic material boundary(162) for isolating the magnetic material grain. A center layer(120) is placed between the soft magnetic lower layer and the structure layer.
