PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus, capable of determining the presence and the degree of the occurrence of an interrupted thread defects in a hollow fiber membrane module, while preventing the hollow fiber membrane from degrading by using a non-contact method, and is capable of determining the quality more accurately than conventional methods. SOLUTION: The method includes a step of irradiating a potting edge of the hollow fiber membrane module with a light from a light source; a step of photographing the light reflected from the edge; a step of detecting a hollow fiber membrane whose hollow part becomes a cavity, by correlating an image obtained by the photographing step with a predetermined model image; a step of masking the hollow fiber membrane whose hollow part becomes the cavity; a step of binarizing a resin region and a hollow fiber membrane region whose hollow part is blocked about the photographed image; a step of detecting a hollow fiber membrane whose hollow part is blocked from the binarized image; and a step of determining the hollow fiber membrane module as a defective product, when the number of hollow fiber membranes, each having the blocked hollow part, exceeds a predetermined threshold.
