POLYELECTROLYTE EMULSION AND ITS APPLICATION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyelectrolyte emulsion affording a film that exhibits high adhesion to a substrate, suffers from little deterioration in adhesion particularly even if brought into contact with water or exposed to a highly humid state and has high durability.

SOLUTION: [1] The polyelectrolyte emulsion comprises polyelectrolyte particles dispersed in a dispersing medium and has a ζ potential of within the range of -50 to -300 mV at a measuring temperature of 25°C. [2] The polyelectrolyte emulsion described in [1] has a volume-average particle size of 100 nm to 200 μm. [3] A catalyst layer is obtained from a catalyst composition comprising the polyelectrolyte emulsion described in [1] or [2] and a catalyst component. The membrane electrode assembly having the catalyst layer and a solid polymer fuel cell are also provided.
