An electrophoretic display device is provided to integrate an upper substrate and a light guiding plate in one body, thereby improving the display characteristic in a dark state and reducing the thickness of the display device. A display layer(3) is formed above a lower substrate(1), wherein the display layer contains microcapsules(15) having charged colors. An upper substrate(21) is formed above the display layer, wherein the upper substrate transmits a frontally incident light, and reflects a laterally incident light to the display layer. At least more than one light source(30) supplies the laterally incident light to an inside of the upper substrate from a lateral portion of the upper substrate. |
