Silicon carbide (ceramic particles), fine particles of silicon carbide having an average particle size smaller than that of the silicon carbide particles, and an erosion-resistant material (alumina) are mixed to obtain a puddle. The erosion-resistant material has higher alkali resistance than an oxide of the element contained in silicon carbide (silica). The average particle size of the silicon carbide is preferably in the range of 5 to 100 µm, and the average particle size of the fine particles is preferably in the range of 0.1 to 10 µm. The puddle is extruded into a honeycomb shape, and firing is performed at 1,600°C to 2,200°C. At this time, simultaneously, alumina as the erosion-resistant material appears on the surface of the molded body. Therefore, it is not necessary to carry out a step of forming alumina as the erosion-resistant material on the surface of the molded body separately from the step of firing the molded body. Consequently, it is possible to produce a honeycomb structure having high alkali resistance with a small number of steps. The honeycomb structure 10 has high alkali resistance. |
