<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To redouble pixels in two dimensions with one optical deflecting element, to simplify the device constitution, and to reduce energy loss. <P>SOLUTION: Provided are a transparent substrate 42 which has an electrode array 44 corresponding to a longitudinal pixel pitch, a transparent substrate 41 which has an electrode array 43 corresponding to a lateral pixel pitch, and a liquid crystal layer 45 which is interposed between the two transparent substrates 41 and 42 and can have its refractive index distribution controlled by voltage application from the electrode arrays.
