An image forming apparatus and a control method thereof are provided to reduce an error to be generated due to the instability of a contact surface between a body and an exchange unit in the image forming apparatus. An image forming apparatus records/reads the data to/from the first memory through an electrical contact with an exchange unit(150). The effective range on the use information value of the exchange unit is stored in the second memory. A motor(140) drives the exchange unit. When the image forming apparatus is initiated, a control member(170) reads the use information value stored in the first memory, and compares the read information value with the use information value stored in the second memory. When the use information value stored in the second memory does not coincide with the use information value stored in the first memory, the control member outputs a motor driving signal for driving the motor.
