In an elevator device, first and second elevator cars are displaceable between each other, between a first position where the cars are side by side in the horizontal direction and a position where the cars are arranged in a top-bottom relationship. When the first and second cars are at the second position, the first car can pass by the second car. In the first car are provided a first front doorway and a first rear doorway. In the second car are provided a second front doorway and a second rear doorway. In the backside of the second car, there is provided a rescue doorway.
