A dishwasher and a controlling method thereof are provided to maintain the water level within a tub at normal level by mounting at least two water sensors onto a sidewall of the tub and controlling the water level within the tub by the sensor deciding if the water level reaches the each sensor. A dishwasher comprises a tub, and at least two sensors(210,220). The tub accommodates dishes to be washed by washing water. The sensors, as hardness sensors or optical sensors, are mounted onto a sidewall of the tub, wherein one sensor for sensing over-water supply is mounted higher than the other sensor for sensing normal water level. The fact that the water in the tub is at normal level or over-supplied can be discriminated according to the value sensed by the sensors.
