A method of controlling a digital image processing apparatus and an apparatus using the method are provided to measure the changed amount of data only when the changed amount of second data for first data is maintained for a certain time, thereby performing self-photographing without limit of the operation time of a self-timer and preventing a undesired image from being photographed due to a suddenly appearing object. A method of controlling a digital image processing apparatus comprises the following steps of: setting a self-photographing mode(301); storing first data on the image of a subject(303); detecting second data on a changed subject image(306); measuring the changed amount of the second data for the first data(307); and comparing the changed amount with the setting value and performing self-photographing(309,310).
