Preparing a crosslinked polymer film bearing ionic groups having a cation e.g. proton and organic ion e.g. imidazolium ion comprises extruding a polymer material having at least a prepolymer, polymerizing the extruded polymer and grafting the ionic groups, where the prepolymer has repeating units having aromatic groups, functional groups and reactive groups, in which the functional groups are polymerizable thermally at a temperature greater than the extrusion temperature or photochemically, and the reactive groups allow grafting of the ionic groups. Preparing a crosslinked polymer film bearing ionic groups in which cation of formula M(p+) or proton and organic ions are ammonium-, imidazolium-, pyrazolium-, tetrazolium-, pyridinium- or guanidinium-ion comprises extruding a polymer material having at least a prepolymer, polymerizing the extruded polymer and grafting the ionic groups, where the prepolymer has repeating units having aromatic-, functional- and reacting-groups, in which the functional group is thermally polymerizable at a temperature greater than the temperature of extrusion or photochemically polymerizable group, and the reacting groups allow grafting of the ionic groups. M : metal ion; and p : 1-3 oxidation number. Independent claims are included for: (1) a film obtained by the process; (2) a polyphenyl compound useful as the prepolymer of formula (I); and (3) a process of preparing (I) comprising preparing a telechelic polysulfone of formula (Ia) by the polycondensation of 4,4'-dichlorodiphenylsulfone, 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl monomer and 1,4(bis)(phydroxyphenoxy) benzene monomers, in the presence of an aprotic polar solvent and a weak base source of M +> cation, and modifying the obtained prepolymer with monofunctional monomer of formula (Ib).
