PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To execute high speed wavelet transform without the need for an external memory.

SOLUTION: A wavelet transform apparatus 1 disclosed herein is configured to build therein a level 1 buffer 12 to a level 4 buffer 15 for storing coefficients as a result of horizontal analysis filtering for each division level in the wavelet transform and a coefficient buffer 17 for storing parts of coefficients generated on the way of vertical analysis filtering. A vertical analysis filter section 18 reads the coefficients as a result of the horizontal analysis filtering from the buffer of a corresponding level, reads the coefficients from the coefficient buffer 17, executes the vertical analysis filtering by using the coefficients, and inputs the result to a horizontal analysis filter section 19. The present invention can be applied to image coders for executing wavelet transform as pre-processing of compression.
