PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need for including an MPEG decoding function and an encoding function into a recorder for minimizing the increase of cost to be added in digital recording and reproducing. SOLUTION: The absence of MPEG processing in a consumer digital recorder/reproducer may disable the on-screen message display of a recorder status. Various methods are disclosed which facilitate on-screen display of the recorder/reproducer status messages. The reproduced decoded analog video signal (102) is returned to the digital recorder/reproducer (200), and a status message is inserted into it.
