PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of sorting originals. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus 1 is provided with: an image sensor 5 for reading out a fed original and generating image data; an image judgment part 71 for determining whether the original includes a color image or not on the basis of the image data; a trace pattern estimation part 73 for estimating whether the original includes a trace pattern or not on the basis of the image data; and a switching control part 75 for switching positions (discharge trays T1, T2) to which the original is discharged in accordance with a first case that the color image judgment part 71 determines the inclusion of a color image and/or the trace pattern estimation part 73 estimates the inclusion of a trace pattern and a second case that the color image judgment part 71 determines no inclusion of a color image and the trace pattern estimation part 73 estimates no inclusion of a trace pattern.
