PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent which avoids faulty application and uneven application due to clogging of a nozzle or the like and gives a liquid crystal alignment layer excellent in film thickness uniformity when a liquid crystal alignment layer is formed on a substrate by an ink-jet application method. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal aligning agent for ink jet comprises at least one polymer selected from a polyamic acid synthesized by polyaddition reaction of a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and a diamine compound and an imidated polymer obtained by imidating the polyamic acid, wherein an average imidation rate expressing the proportion of imide bond units to the total amount of the polymer is in a range of 0-55 mol%.
