PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a neuroprotective agent which relieves mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress of the neurons. SOLUTION: The neuroprotective agent and prophylatic for neurodegenerative diseases comprises astaxanthine and/or its ester. The neuroprotective agent is effective especially for the protection against the degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and the adrenergic neurons of the locus ceruleus.
