The method involves separating a combustion chamber (4) by a piston (3) arranged in a cylinder space (1) of a cylinder (2). Openings of inlet and outlet channels (5, 7) are opened and closed by inlet and outlet valves (6, 8). A fuel/air mixture is formed by a fuel injecting valve (9). An igniting device is extended into the combustion chamber, such that the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber is inflamed, when the inlet valve in the inlet channel is opened. The inflammation of the prepared fuel/air mixture takes place at one time, at which the intake valve is completely opened.
