A secondary battery, and an electrolyte for a secondary battery are provided to inhibit the decomposition of an eutectic mixture, thereby preventing the deterioration of performance of a battery. An electrolyte comprises an eutectic mixture; and 0.01-10 parts by weight of a first compound which is reduced at a lithium potential (Li/Li^+) higher than the lower limit of the electrochemical window of the eutectic mixture based on 100 parts by weight of the electrolyte. Preferably the first compound is selected from the group consisting of 12-crown-4, 18-crown-6, catechol carbonate, vinylene carbonate, ethylene sulfite, methyl chloroformate, succinimide and methyl cinnamate; and the eutectic mixture is represented by the formula 1, wherein R1, R2 and R3 are independently H, a halogen atom, a C1-C20 alkyl group, an alkylamine group, an alkenyl group or an aryl group; X is H, C, Si, O, N, P or S; and Y is an anion capable of forming a salt with a lithium ion. |
