PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which prevents the occurrence of void images due to abnormal discharges and provides images that are high in quality. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a plurality of image carriers, an intermediate transfer body which moves in a prescribed direction and is capable of transmitting the whole or a part of the light, and a plurality of transfer means which successively electrostatically transfer the toner images, formed on the image carriers, to the intermediate transfer body. The transfer means has a discharge light detecting means 119 which has a transfer roller 105, containing an optical anisotropic material in the whole or a part in its thickness direction, is provided on the end part side of the transfer roller 105, and detects the discharge light, condensed at the end surface by the optical anisotropic material and generated at the time of the transfer, and a control means which controls the transfer conditions of the transfer means according to the information relating to the detected discharge light.
