PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coumarin-based compound enabling red fluorescence emission high in both luminance and efficiency. SOLUTION: The coumarin-based compound is represented by the general formula(1) (wherein, R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>2</SB>are each H, a halogen atom, cyano or the like, wherein the two groups adjacent to each other may be bound to each other to form a ring, i.e. a conjugated and condensed aromatic ring, heterocyclic ring or composite ring; and X<SB>1</SB>to X<SB>6</SB>are each a halogen atom).
