PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for changing friction pads for enhancing operability in pushing a piston in to widen a gap between friction pads, this operation being needed because, when the friction pads of a disk brake are changed by first removing a caliper, then replacing the friction pads on both sides of the brake disk with new ones, then returning the caliper back to its original position and locking it in place, the new friction pads get in the way of the caliper being returned to the original position as the new ones are thicker than the old ones. SOLUTION: The apparatus includes a pair of abutting elements 13, 14, one of which abuts the first piston of the caliper 1, and the other of which abuts a second piston 20 opposite to the wall surface of the caliper or to the first piston 3; and an expansion device mechanism that works to widen the gap between the abutting elements 13, 14 by feeding gas in and to narrow the gap between the abutting elements as the gas is removed.
