An apparatus, a method, and a computer-readable medium for determining a position of a video window are provided to characterize a selected portion of a real image based on a distribution of luminance values for the selected portion, thereby automatically identifying the location of the video window. A video frame consisting of a plurality of pixels each having associated pixel data is received, wherein a group of the pixel data is associated with a real image(902). The video frame is divided into a plurality of regions having the same number of pixels(904). A display is divided into a plurality of evaluation rectangles having the same number of regions(908). If the evaluation rectangle is determined to include a portion of the real image, a pixel coordinate corresponding to the evaluation rectangle is designated as an edge of a video window.
