PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform appropriate uniformity correction even when there is a change in an angular distribution of light emitted from a spatial light modulation element and reaching a screen. SOLUTION: A projection-type display device includes: a light source 21; a spatial light modulation element 25 which modulates incident light according to an applied image signal and emits the modulated light; an illumination optical system 23 which illuminates the spatial light modulation element 25 with the light from the light source 21; a projection lens 27 which projects the light emitted from the spatial light modulation element 25 to a projection plane; a shielding means 1 which is positioned along the light path on the side of either the illumination optical system 23 or the projection lens 27 with respect to the spatial light modulation element 25, and which can change a shielding amount of transmitted light; and image signal correction means 3 to 5 which perform correction to compensate an optical output to the projection plane corresponding to the current shielding amount in the current shielding amount changed by the shielding means 1 according to picture plane areas of the spatial light modulation element 25 divided into a plurality of areas, with respect to the image signal applied to the spatial light modulation element 25.
