PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter improved in assemblability and reduced in cost without increasing an axial length of the starter. SOLUTION: The starter 1 of the invention has a housing 2 and a center case 3. The housing 2 is formed on a rear end side with a cylindrical opening 21 in which the center case 3 is arranged. A circular fitting recess 21a is formed in an inner peripheral surface of the opening 21. The center case 3 is formed on a front side face with a fitting projection 31 which is in an area inner than the outermost peripheral surface in a distal direction and projects forward. The center case 3 is arranged to fit the fitting projection 31 into the fitting recess 21a and to cover the opening 21. The center case, therefore, has no influence on the arrangement positions of a motor 4 and a reduction gear 5. The axial length of the starter 1 is not affected, and the axial length of a fitting portion can be increased.
