A rotary valve (71) of a compressor has a release path (71e) for releasing high-pressure residual gas, which is not completely discharged in a compression/discharge stroke and remains in place, from a cylinder bore (B<SUB>1</SUB>) in the initial stage of an intake stroke to other cylinder bores (B<SUB>3</SUB>, B<SUB>4</SUB>) where the pressure is lower than that in the cylinder bore (B<SUB>1</SUB>). The release path (71e) has an entrance (71f), a first exit (71g), a second exit (71h), and a communication section (71k) for interconnecting them. In a time period when the entrance (71f) of the release path (71e) is communicated with the cylinder bore (B<SUB>1</SUB>) in the initial stage of an intake stroke, the first exit (71g) is first communicated with the cylinder bore (B<SUB>3</SUB>) immediately before, in the rotation direction, the cylinder bore (B<SUB>4</SUB>) right opposite the cylinder bore (B<SUB>1</SUB>), and then the second exit (71h) is communicated with the cylinder bore (B<SUB>4</SUB>) right opposite the cylinder bore (B<SUB>1</SUB>). |
