An image receiving apparatus for transceiving data to an external PVR(Personal Video Recorder) device and a method for transceiving the data to the external PVR device are provided to simply store and reproduce AV data in the external PVR device by simplifying general-purpose communication lines and data lines. An image receiving apparatus comprises an interface unit(160) and a controller(150). The interface unit transmits data corresponding to AV(Audio/Video) data and a user command to an external recording device(200). The controller controls the interface unit to insert the data corresponding to the user command to a stream in which the AV data is recorded and transmit the stream to the external recording device. A stream inserting the AV data is transmitted to the external recording device in a section at a first level of a control signal, and a stream into which the data is inserted corresponding to the user command is transmitted to the external recording device in a section at a second level of the control signal.
