Perceptual quantisation of digital images takes account of the human visual system's properties. As certain image processing algorithms require linearly quantised image data input, perceptual quantisation needs to be undone before processing. After image processing, gamma processing ensures adaptation to both the display and the eye's perceptual characteristics.
