PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition having general characteristics required for the composition, a nematic phase, particularly large optical anisotropy and negative dielectric anisotropy; and a liquid crystal display element having general characteristics required for the element and a short response time. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition comprises, as a first component, a specific tetracyclic compound with a phenylene in which one hydrogen atom is substituted with fluorine, and, as a second component, a specific compound with a phenylene in which two hydrogen atoms are substituted with halogens, and has negative dielectric anisotropy.
