PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct variation in attenuation characteristics among individual lamps, and to correct variation in density of image data among pixels of an image sensor due to light distribution of the lamp. SOLUTION: An initial density measuring section 114 makes an image sensor 30 measure the initial density of a background board 33 obtained by irradiating it with a lamp 25. A background board density measuring section 115 makes the image sensor 30 measure the density of the background board 33 obtained by irradiating it with the lamp 25, every time when a predetermined number (e.g. eleven) of documents P are read out by means of the image sensor 30. A correcter 116 corrects the image data using the density of the background board and the initial density, every time when the density of the background board is calculated.
