A spring wheel comprises a hub or wheel body 15 with radially outwardly extending peripheral blades 11 which interleave with blades 13 extending radially inwardly from the inner periphery of a rim 12 to define with the facing peripheries of the rim and hub a series of cells in each of which is disposed a rubber or like block 17 which is dimensioned so that, under load, it is at all times under some compression in the cell, but so that small spaces are left, in the cells at the top of the wheel, which spaces become progressively filled as they move, on rotation of the wheel to the lower part of the wheel, the blocks being retained axially in the cells on each side of the wheel by means such as a pair of radially spaced concentric retaining rings 20, 23 or 21, 24 bolted respectively to the hub and the rim, and the blades 11, 13 being radially spaced from the facing rim and hub peripheries respectively to provide for relative radial movement. As shown the wheel body disc 15 has a hub 10, a brake drum 27 and an outer peripheral flange 16 from which the blades 11 extend. The rim 12 comprises a rail-engaging tyre, and the pairs of retaining rings 20, 23 and 21, 24 have bevelled block-engaging faces, Fig. 4, which together provide side recesses of 140 to 170 degrees included angle into which the blocks are compressed, under axle load. The blocks each have a circumferential length of from 1.2 to 2.2. times the radial height of the block.</p> |
