PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that a method for distinguishing an object utilizing a defocus image cannot be employed in moving picture photography. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus capable of imaging a moving picture using an image sensor (2) for taking an image through photoelectric conversion includes an optical means (1) capable of altering the state of an image being taken by an imaging means, a movement detection circuit (6) for deciding whether the movement of an image taken during photography of a moving picture under a first state by the optical means is below a preset level, an imaging control means (14, 15) for controlling to take an image under a second state different from the first state by controlling the optical means if the movement is below a preset level, an object detection circuit (5) for detecting a main object by comparing an image taken under a second state with an image taken just before under a first state, and means (8, 9, 15) for replacing the image under a second state by the image taken just before under a first state.
