PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable engine control parameters to be set at appropriate values corresponding to an actual control mode of a variable valve lift device even if a switching fault of the variable valve lift device occurs when an oil temperature is low. SOLUTION: When a target control mode of the variable valve lift device is switched from a high lift mode to a low lift mode at the time of low load (for example, idling time) and low oil temperature, intake pipe pressure variation of an engine is compared to a switch determination value and whether the actual control mode of the variable valve lift device is switched to a low lift mode or not is determined. After the actual control mode is confirmed to be switched to the low lift mode, the engine control parameters (such as ignition timing, fuel injection quantity) are switched to control parameters for the low lift mode. In the case of determining that the actual control mode is not switched to the low lift mode, it is determined that switch failure has occurred, and the engine control parameters are maintained as control parameters for a high lift mode.
