PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve gear capable of improving startup performance by controlling open and close timing of an intake valve according to a crank angle before engine start. SOLUTION: When an ignition switch is turned on, at Step 2, a present engine state is detected from engine temperature or the like and at Step 4, the present operation angle of a lift variable mechanism is detected from a signal of the rotational position of a control shaft detected by a control shaft angle sensor. When the position of a piston in a cylinder in a compression stroke is determined at Step 5 to deviate a predetermined distance or more from a bottom dead center, at Step 6, the operation angle of the lift variable mechanism 1 is greatly controlled and a target value for the close timing of the intake valve is corrected to a slightly-delay side.
