A safety member, and a lithium secondary battery containing the safety member are provided to prevent the internal shortage due to the compression or penetration of needle-shaped body and the falling of a battery and to minimize the generation of heat in case of shortage. A safety member(500) is a pair of sheet type safety members which are adhered to the both sides of an electrode assembly, wherein the each safety member comprises a metal sheet (sheet A, 510) electrically connected with a positive electrode terminal, a metal sheet (sheet B, 520) electrically connected with a negative electrode terminal, and an insulation sheet(530, 540) interposed between the two metal sheets. The outer metal sheet (sheet A or B) between the two safety members is interconnected at the lower part, the lower connection part(511) has a width narrower than that of the metal sheet, and the both lower corners(512, 513) of the outer metal sheet (sheet A or B) are relatively greater than the both lower corners of the inner metal sheet (sheet B or A) of independent structure.
