摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming an alignment layer with high alignment stability by using an inorganic material and to provide a liquid crystal optical element and an optical head device excellent in optical characteristics and reliability. <P>SOLUTION: After an alignment layer composition containing an inorganic material having an organic group and a solvent is applied on a substrate, the alignment layer composition is heat-treated to remove the solvent. Then the alignment layer composition is obliquely irradiated with an ion beam to remove a part of the organic group to form a porous alignment layer having pores inclined with respect to the layer surface. The step of removing the solvent is preferably carried out in air at a temperature of 200&deg;C or lower.
