PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus which corrects the deviation of a focal position resulting from the backlash of a lens barrel at the start-up time thereby performing optimum focus control. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus is provided with: a lens system 101 including a focusing lens system to form an object image on a prescribed image forming surface; a CCD 103 that images the object image input through the lens system 101 and outputs the image data; an external AF sensor 136 to measure a distance up to the object; a focus driver 131 that moves the focusing lens to a first focal position set in accordance with the object distance to thereby perform an automatic focusing operation; a zoom driver 133 that specifies an optimum second focal position based on an image signal output from the CCD 103 while slightly moving the focusing lens near the first focal position, then moves the focusing lens to the second focal position to thereby perform the automatic focusing operation. The imaging apparatus also includes a correcting means (CPU 121) to correct the first focal position based on difference information between the first focal position and the second focal position when the first focusing position is different from the second focal position.
