PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a ketone-modified resorcinol-formalin resin containing no inorganic salts, having a moderate flowability when transformed into an aqueous solution, and having reduced contents of both a resorcinol monomer and a resorcinol-formalin resin of resorcinol pentanuclear or higher nuclear molecules. SOLUTION: The process for producing a ketone-modified resorcinol-formalin resin comprises the steps of adding, to a water solvent, 20-150 pts.wt. of resorcinol (A) and 20-80 pts.wt. of an inorganic salt (B), both based on 100 pts.wt. of water, dissolving a resorcinol-formalin resin, adding 10-200 pts.wt. of an organic solvent (C) having a solubility parameter of 7.5 to 11.0 based on 100 pts.wt. of the resorcinol (A), stirring the mixture at a liquid temperature of the boiling point of the organic solvent (C) or below to give a two-phase system containing no remaining solid matter, adding a catalytic amount of organic acid or inorganic acid (D), and adding 1-40% formalin (E) dropwise while maintaining the reaction system at 0-60°C so as to achieve a formaldehyde/resorcinol molar ratio of 0.3-0.8 based on the resorcinol (A). The process uses the organic solvent (C) as a reaction solvent to form a liquid-liquid heterogeneous system with water and for modifying a resorcinol-formalin resin. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
