A computer implemented method for determining the transaction currency to be used in a transaction between a card holder and a merchant is disclosed. The method includes the steps of obtaining the card number, which includes a Bank Information Number (BIN), and sequentially selecting a currency from a list of available currencies and comparing the BIN with a list of numbers associated with the selected currency. The comparisons continue until a match is found and the transaction currency is determined or there are no more currencies on the list to search, in which case the currency of the merchant is used in the transaction.
