<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a planar lighting system capable of maintaining a spot-like light source and the light-incident surface of a light guide plate at a prescribed interval and allowing them to oppose each other, and stably holding the optical coupling of the light guide plate and the spot-like light source. <P>SOLUTION: In the planar lighting system 10, a spot-like light source 12 is arranged along a sidewall 18a of an outer frame member 18, the light guide plate 14 and an inner frame member 16 are connected by a connection means 40 so that a light-incident surface 14a of the light guide plate 14 is positioned at the rear with distance d<SB>1</SB>from a tip surface 17 of the inner frame member 16.
