<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect locations of an upper end and a lower end in height direction of a bar code at low cost. <P>SOLUTION: A start code is detected by performing raster scan rightward from a dot (a) of an upper left corner of a rectangle area 115 containing a bar code 110 and based on the detection location of the start code, a dot of an upper left corner of the bar code 110 is specified. Also a stop code is detected by performing raster scan leftward from a dot (b) of a lower right corner of the rectangle area 115 and based on the detected location of the stop code, a dot of a lower right corner of the bar code 110 is specified.
