PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head, a magnetic head assembly and a magnetic disk drive device preventing leakage of magnetic fluxes from end edges of a lower shield layer and/or an upper shield layer of a read-out head element, and to provided a method of manufacturing the thin film magnetic head. SOLUTION: The thin film magnetic head includes at least an MR read-out head element having: the lower shield layer; the upper shield layer; and an MR layer formed between the lower shield layer and the upper shield layer, and the thin film magnetic head is provided with a lower antiferromagnetic layer laminated and bonded to only the end edge part of the lower shield layer.
