The shredder (11) has a cutting unit (17), an inlet (14) to the cutting unit and a cutting unit drive (18), where crushing takes place in the cutting unit. A thickness measuring device (25) is arranged in the area of the inlet for measuring the thickness of supplied flat material (23) such as paper. The measuring device is designed in a contactless working manner, in particular as capacitive measuring device with capacitive sensors that are arranged above and below the inlet. A controller (21) and/or a memory integrated or connected with the controller are provided. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a crushing device.
