The invention provides a liquid crystal alignment layer which has a high voltage holding ratio and permits speedy relaxation of a residual charge accumulated by the application of DC voltage even after long-time exposure to high temperature. A liquid crystal aligning agent containing the following components (A) and (B): (A) a polymer which is obtained by subjecting a polyamic acid composed of repeating units represented by the structural formula [1] to imidation and which contains 0.1 to 3 carboxyl groups per repeating unit on the average: [1] (wherein R<SUB>1</SUB> is a tetravalent organic group; R<SUB>2</SUB> is a divalent organic group; and n is a positive integer) and (B) an amine compound having one primary amino group and a nitrogenous aromatic heterocycle in the molecule in which the primary amino group is bonded to an aliphatic hydrocarbon group or a non-aromatic cyclic hydrocarbon group.
