PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning method by which cleaning efficiency lowered by intrusion of components of a photosensitive layer, etc., into the brush parts of straight brushes by cleaning the photosensitive layer, etc., is restored to achieve more efficient removal, with respect to a cleaning method for removing the entire photoreceptor layer on a cylindrical metal substrate using straight brushes. SOLUTION: In the proposed cleaning method, the outer circumferential surface of an electrophotographic photoreceptor having at least a layer comprising a thermosetting resin and an organic photosensitive layer stacked on a cylindrical metal substrate is rubbed with a plurality of straight brushes arranged on the outer circumferential surface of the photoreceptor at intervals in such a way that the axial center as a whole coincide freely with the center of the body to be cleaned, while feeding a cleaning liquid, to remove the entire photoreceptor layer. A cleaning tool brush having the same external shape as the cylindrical metal substrate is set in a position in which the photoreceptor is set in place of the photoreceptor, and components of the photosensitive layer which have intruded into the brush parts of the straight brushes are removed and cleaned.
