The invention relates to a stair assistance device comprising a hollow box section handrail secured to a wall by means of supports. The handrail comprises a round section at each end with round end stops. The device also comprises a saddle with an arm extending perpendicularly from the saddle which the user may hold for support whilst ascending or descending the stairs. The saddle is preferably made from hollow box section material with a longitudinal slot on one side, to allow the saddle to operate past the handrail support arms. The saddle can slide freely or lock on the handrail by the inter-action of two dissimilar materials - one with a high coefficient of friction and one with a low coefficient friction-located inside the saddle and positioned diagonally opposite to each other. |
