A method for preparing a sorbitan monostearate is provided to obtain the sorbitan monostearate with high purity, low melting point and improved quality, thereby being used for a synthetic or an agricultural film, coffee primer, ice cream and mayonnaise. A method for preparing a sorbitan monostearate with low melting point comprises the steps of: (a) after mixing 1,4-sorbitan with a fatty acid and adding 0.1-0.2 wt.% of NaOH catalyst thereto, reacting it at a temperature of 220-240 deg.C for 2.5-3.5 hours with the injection of N2; (b) after subjecting the reactants of the step(a) to the vacuum of 40-80 torr to complete the reaction, cooling the reaction solution down to a temperature of 95-100 deg.C; (c) adding 0.3-0.7 wt.% of hydrogen peroxide to the reaction solution obtained from the step(b) and decolorizing it for 1-2 hours; and (d) after isolating tar from the obtained product of the step(c) for 0.5-1.5 hour, filtering and cooling it.
