A plasma display apparatus and a controlling method thereof are provided to prevent an erroneous operation due to overheat by adjusting an address discharge in a predetermined subfield of a frame. A plasma display apparatus includes an address driver and a controller(100). The address driver applies a data pulse to discharge cells so as to turn on/off the discharge cells according to image data inputted from the outside. When the image data is rough patterns, the controller controls the switching of the address driver not to apply a data pulse during a predetermined subfield in a frame. The controller produces gradation of respective discharge cells through the image data, determines whether gradation difference between adjacent discharge cells is larger than a first reference value, and determines whether the rough patterns are or not by comparing the number of discharge cells larger than the first reference value and a second reference value. |
