A lathe comprises a tool slide 1, moved by a screw 5 rotated by a hand wheel 3, and a collar 17 adjustably locked to the hand wheel, the collar carrying an adjustable stop 18. The stop 18 co-operates with an abutment 21 which is swung into its operative position by the operator when the slide approaches the desired position. When the hand wheel is rotated to withdraw the slide, a shoulder on the collar swings the abutment 21 into an inoperative position. The stop 18 is adjusted between cuts according to wear of the tool 8. The slide 1 may also have a stop 34 engaging a fixed abutment 16. Several collars, each having a stop, may be provided. In the latter case, the approach of a slide to its final position may be signalled by a spring-pressed plunger 35, Fig. 10, engaging an abutment 16, there being sufficient play to ensure that the plunger does not seat before the stops 18, 21 have correctly positioned the slide. The collar 17 may be attached to an intermediate sleeve, which itself can be adjusted angularly by a fine-pitch screw to compensate for tool wear. |
