An apparatus is disclosed for endoscopic application of surgical staples adapted to attach surgical mesh to body tissue in laparoscopic hernia surgery. The apparatus includes a frame, and a generally elongated endoscopic section connected to the frame and extending distally therefrom. The endoscopic portion has a longitudinal axis and a distal end portion having a base. A staple storage member is mounted on the base. A staple pusher is positioned at least partially within the endoscopic portion for advancing a staple. The staple pusher has at least two outer spaced lands extending distally for engaging and advancing a backspan of a staple for application to body tissue.
