A method for the treatment of cancer comprising inhibiting or reducing the activity of apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF), wherein the inhibition or reduction of the activity of AIF induces apoptosis in cancer cells and/or suppresses the transformed phenotype of cancer cells. Also provided is a method for the screening and/or identification of drug candidates capable of inhibiting or reducing the activity of AI F and of inducing apoptosis in cancer cells and/or suppressing the transformed phenotype of cancer cells.
